Graduate Assistance Program - General Information

An Orphan Smiles has developed the GAP program for children aging out of the orphanage system. An Orphan Smiles is operating this program in conjunction with Kiev Orphanage 12 and Tsurupinsk Children's Home.

Each year orphans between the ages of 16 and 18 years old graduate from the orphanages. They are sent out into the world on their own. Most of these orphans have no skills, an incomplete education, no money, and no one to turn to for help. Click here to read more about the realities of what life has been like for these graduating orphans.

Ukrainian government supported vocational programs are available to most children who age-out of the orphanage system. The government provides dormitory style housing, food, and $5.00 per month toward a student’s living expenses. However, the monthly stipend is not enough to pay for essential items, such as hygiene items, school supplies, and clothing. Many children are unable to cope and sadly do not complete their training and will turn to crime, prostitution, and other means to get by.

Currently, An Orphan Smiles is providing assistance for graduating orphans at the following locations, if you would like more info regarding any of the programs please Contact Leslie.

Please click on the orphanage name above for specific details regarding the GAP program at that location.

In conjunction with our GAP program, An Orphan Smiles also supports the Graduate Support Center located at Kiev Orphanage 12. The Graduate Support Center helps all graduates, those presently enrolled in our GAP program, former graduates, and other “aged-out” orphans in Ukraine. Please visit the GSC program page - Graduate Support Center.
