Sponsor a Child within a Family Unit

The children at Kiev Orphanage 12 (O12) live in family units. Rather than grouping the kids by age and sex, the O12 kids are grouped into units of various ages and sexes. The family units are placed on each floor of the orphanage. Their surroundings consist of a working kitchen, modern bathroom, dining area, family room with couches and television, and bedrooms which sleep two children of the same sex per room.

The children have typical family responsibilities. They have chore charts to track the completion of sweeping/mopping, vacuuming, kitchen work, and various other household chores. Each child is responsible for preparing a dinner for the entire family unit once-a-week. The children have also established their own family rules, which are posted for everyone's reference. They have hygiene standards that must also be followed.

There are photographs on the walls, much like we would see in our own homes. Individual photos of each family member, and also group photos of fun times together. The children have decorated their shared living spaces as a group, and each bedroom is decorated to the style of the two kids who share the room. One can see how different the kids are by their decorating styles! There is also a pet in each family unit which all of the children are responsible for.

Because the children live in such close family units, we would like for sponsors to not only sponsor an individual child, but to also be willing to help the entire family unit. The children in each family unit have very close relationships with each other. They are used to sharing all that they have. They have formed bonds that are similar to how families operate in a typical family setting.

Helping the family unit would include sending items which all of the children in the family would share. These items could include school supplies, clothing and hygiene items, candy, and even toys. It is appropriate to send items in your box that would be designated for your particular sponsored child, and those items could be marked accordingly. Otherwise, we ask that the items sent be shared with the "family". Written correspondence will be between you and your specific sponsored child.

We also encourage the communication between sponsors within a family group. We can facilitate communication between sponsors at certain times in particular, such as at Christmas, Easter, and during the summer months. Those are times when sending items as a group of sponsors would be most effective for the children. For instance, sponsors within one family unit might correspond with one another to arrange for Christmas and Easter celebrations. Sponsors might work together to send items that would be appropriate for when the children spend time outside during the summer.
